Vegan cooking with the family: 8 recipes everyone eats — even the sceptics

The family dilemma

A very common set-up in German households in 2026: one family member eats vegan, the rest don't. Mum or daughter says “I'm not eating animals any more”, Dad waves a Currywurst around. The result: two frying pans, two pots, two shopping lists, double the stress.

There's a better way. There are recipes that are vegan and don't “taste vegan” — because they rely on flavour intensity, texture and satiety rather than meat substitutes. The sceptics at the table often don't even notice that there's no animal in it.

The 8 recipes for the whole family

1. Creamy pasta al limone (20 min)

Pasta + garlic + lemon + cashew cream (soaked cashews + nutritional yeast + garlic in the blender) + fresh basil. Even dyed-in-the-wool Italians go back for seconds — the cashew creaminess is indistinguishable from cream.

2. Mushroom bourguignon with polenta (approx. 75 min, 60 of them braising time)

Where the classic bœuf bourguignon uses beef, here it's large portobello + chestnut mushrooms. Braise for 1 h with red wine, carrots, pearl onions, thyme and rosemary — served with polenta. Restaurant-worthy and filling.

3. Vegan cottage pie (40 min)

Lentils + carrots + celery + red wine + tomato purée as the filling; on top: mashed potatoes with vegan margarine. Bake in the oven for 20 min. Completely inconspicuous for those who normally expect minced meat.

4. Crispy cauliflower wings with buffalo sauce (30 min)

Cauliflower florets in batter (flour + plant-based milk + salt), 12 min in the AirFryer or oven. With buffalo sauce (hot sauce + vegan margarine + agave or maple syrup). Young eaters at the table love them — parents too.

5. Tofu schnitzel wraps (25 min)

Firm smoked tofu cut into slices, in a soy and mustard marinade, breaded (flour + plant-based milk + breadcrumbs) and fried. In a wrap with salad, tomatoes and vegan aioli. Tastes like a schnitzel wrap and nobody notices a thing.

6. Black bean burgers (35 min)

Made from black beans, quinoa, walnuts, mushrooms, onion and spices. A proper patty feel, not the “fake veggie burger that falls apart”. With home-made BBQ sauce on vegan burger buns.

7. Pizza bianca with caramelised onions (40 min)

Pizza dough, a garlic and olive oil base instead of tomato, on top: caramelised onions (sweated slowly for 20 min), rosemary, vegan mozzarella (cashew-based, home-made or shop-bought). Sweet, salty, crispy — it always works.

8. Vegan tiramisu (15 min preparation, 4 h in the fridge)

Soya quark + vanilla + sugar + espresso + grated chocolate + vegan sponge fingers (available in the organic or vegan aisle). At least 4 h in the fridge, better still overnight. Who would have thought it turns out just as creamy without mascarpone?

How to solve it with a mixed family

Three rules that work in almost every family:

Rule 1: On vegan days, EVERYONE eats vegan

Instead of “2 separate pots” every day, decide on 2–3 vegan days per week for the whole family. It reduces stress, cost and food waste.

Rule 2: On meat days, meat is added, not taken out

Take spaghetti bolognese: you cook a vegan lentil bolognese as the base. The meat-eaters get separately fried mince on top. One lot of kitchen work, everyone fed — and the vegan eater doesn't feel “punished”.

Rule 3: The sauce is always vegan, the side is universal

Dressings, pestos, curries, tomato sauces → make them all vegan. They don't taste any worse, they keep longer and everyone can eat them.

Family profiles for mixed households (from Standard — and already in the free trial account)

In KI-Kochhilfe you can store up to 6 family members, each with their own diet style, allergens and excluded ingredients: Mum vegan, Dad eats everything, child gluten-free, and so on. For every recipe you tap who's eating under “Who's eating?” — the AI automatically generates the recipe that respects all the restrictions at once.

Example configuration:

  • Anna: vegan, allergic to nuts
  • Markus: eats everything, doesn't like coriander
  • Lisa: lactose-intolerant

For a recipe request “Pasta for 3”, the AI automatically generates a vegan, nut-free, coriander-free pasta — which makes it lactose-free too, so Lisa is covered as well.
