What can you cook with fridge leftovers? How 5 ingredients become proper recipes

12 May 2026 10 min read· by KI-Kochhilfe Redaktion

The daily dilemma: “What shall we cook today?”

You open the fridge, peer inside — and see:

  • half a courgette, already going a bit soft
  • 150 g of chicken breast from yesterday
  • two eggs
  • the last of a tub of crème fraîche
  • an opened jar of capers

The obvious reaction: order in again. Or quickly do pasta with tomato sauce, because nothing better springs to mind. The leftovers? Stay where they are and get thrown away two days later.

In Germany alone, 78 kg of food per person per year ends up in the bin, according to the Bundeszentrum für Ernährung (Germany's federal nutrition centre). Private households are responsible for around 52% of that — and the most common reason: “I had no idea what to cook with it.”

Why classic recipe search fails here

If you type “chicken courgette” into a typical recipe site, you get:

  • 200 recipes listed
  • Most of them need extra ingredients you don't have (soy sauce, peanut oil, fresh ginger, three different kinds of pepper…)
  • You have to go through every recipe one by one
  • In the end you go shopping anyway — or just order a pizza

The problem is the logic of the search: classic recipe databases show you what they have, not what you need.

🍳 What can I cook with MY leftovers? Ask the AI!

Simply type in what's in your fridge — in 60 seconds you'll get a complete recipe with a photo, calories and step-by-step instructions.

The reversal: a recipe from your ingredients, not from a database

What we do differently at KI-Kochhilfe: you enter what you have — not what you're looking for. The AI then generates a suitable recipe that:

  • Takes the ingredients you already have as its base
  • Suggests at most 2-3 everyday additions (salt, oil, maybe an onion — things you have in anyway)
  • Delivers a proper recipe: ingredient list, step-by-step instructions, preparation time, calories per portion, finished photo

From the example above, for instance, you get:

Chicken and courgette frittata with capers 4 steps, 22 minutes, 380 kcal per portion

Instead of scrolling through 200 hits: wait about a minute, done.

How exactly does it work?

Step 1: You type in what you have

You don't need to enter every quantity perfectly. “Half a courgette, a piece of chicken, 2 eggs, crème fraîche, capers” is enough. The AI understands everyday, colloquial quantities.

Step 2: Optional settings

You can optionally specify:

  • How many portions (1, 2, 4 people)
  • How long it may take (15, 30, 60 min)
  • Which diet (vegetarian, low-carb, gluten-free, vegan…)
  • Which allergens to avoid (nuts, lactose, gluten, histamine…)
  • AirFryer yes/no

From Standard upwards you can even create family profiles — then several diets are taken into account at the same time. One recipe that suits the vegan son and the low-histamine mother simultaneously.

Step 3: You get a complete recipe

In about 30-60 seconds, this appears:

  • Title + photo (AI-generated or from the recipe library)
  • Full ingredient list with quantities
  • Preparation time + difficulty
  • 4-7 preparation steps
  • Nutritional values per portion (kcal, protein, carbs, fat — Standard and up)
  • AirFryer version alongside (if enabled)

Step 4: Save and reuse

Like the recipe? One click saves it to your personal recipe collection (Basis: up to 10 recipes, unlimited from Standard). You can:

  • Bring it up again with one click
  • Schedule it via the weekly menu planner (Premium)
  • Share it with the family (Standard and up)

Three examples from real life

Example 1: The “Sunday evening” classic

You have: leftover minced meat (200 g), 1 pepper, 2 tomatoes, a clove of garlic, leftover rice from lunch.

What gets suggested: Rice stir-fry with mince and vegetables — 18 minutes, 3 steps, one portion at 540 kcal.

Example 2: The “vegan Wednesday”

You have: a head of broccoli, a sweet potato, a tin of chickpeas, peanut butter.

What gets suggested: Sweet potato and broccoli bowl with peanut sauce — 25 minutes, 5 steps, 480 kcal per portion. Completely vegan.

Example 3: The “AirFryer snack”

You have: 4 potatoes, a chunk of Cheddar, a spring onion, sour cream.

What gets suggested: AirFryer loaded potatoes — 22 minutes in the AirFryer, 3 steps, perfect as a quick supper.

What about special diets?

If you or a family member has to go without something, classic recipe search is a particular ordeal: every other recipe contains exactly the thing that's off limits.

With us, you state once what isn't allowed:

  • Gluten-free? — Taken into account automatically
  • Lactose intolerant? — Cream is replaced with oat cream
  • Vegetarian + the usual “must have cheese”? — No problem
  • Low-histamine? — Tomatoes, salami and anything fermented are out
  • Low-carb? — Side dishes are adapted (rice → cauliflower rice, etc.)

These adjustments happen automatically in every recipe, without you having to request them manually.

What doesn't work (honest answer)

So you don't have false expectations:

  • Very exotic ingredients: yuzu, galangal root, Turkish mulberry molasses — they work, but the suggestions are more conventional.
  • Pure quantity optimisation: “I have exactly 437 g of chicken, how many portions?” — we round to realistic sizes.
  • Live availability checks: we don't check whether a recipe respects the current seasonal calendar — you have to decide for yourself whether you want strawberries in February.

What does it cost?

We offer three plans:

  • Basis (€5.99 / month): 30 recipes / month + up to 10 saved recipes + gallery recipes — for singles or a trial phase
  • Standard (€7.99 / month): 65 recipes + saving + calories + AirFryer + step images + family profiles (6 people) — the “sweet spot” for most households
  • Premium (€11.99 / month): 90 recipes + weekly menu planner with leftover use (allergen detection in every plan)

All plans can be cancelled monthly. You can also test 2 recipes for free — no credit card, no newsletter obligation.

An honest calculation

€7.99 a month sounds like “yet another subscription” — and it's a point where many people hesitate. But be honest with yourself and look at where your money goes otherwise:

  • 🥤 Two takeaway coffees a week = €40-50 / month
  • 🍕 One Lieferando order (food delivery, with delivery & tip) = €25-35
  • 🎬 A streaming subscription you haven't opened in three weeks = €10-15
  • 🏋️ A gym membership you use twice a quarter = €30-50
  • 🍫 Snacks at the checkout “by accident” = €15-25

Most of these expenses happen unnoticed — at the end of the month the money is simply gone, without you remembering anything specific.

Now compare that with a tool that takes the most annoying question of the day (“what shall we cook today?”) off your hands at almost every meal.

Even if you don't use up the Standard allowance every month — say you use just 15 of the 65 recipes — one idea costs you around 55 cents at the bottom line. That's less than an ice cream from the kiosk. And unlike the ice cream, the recipe stays saved, you can use it again any time, and it saves you 10-20 minutes of brooding in front of the fridge.

Put another way: you're definitely spending this amount somewhere — the only question is whether you'll still know what on at the end of the month. With KI-Kochhilfe you know every time: on good food without stress.

And then there's that one dinner that goes wrong…

We all act as if cooking were a solved problem. It isn't. Everyone has at least one dish a month that doesn't turn out as hoped. Too dry, too salty, too long in the oven, the wrong ingredients bought — the list is endless. What happens then? In the vast majority of families, two things at once:

  • The ingredients end up in the bin: a typical main meal for a family = €12–25 worth of food, depending on the effort
  • Dinner is rescued by ordering in: €25–40 for pizza, burgers or sushi — including delivery fee and tip

So a single failed meal quickly costs you €40–60. That's three to five times the Standard plan — for one single evening.

How does KI-Kochhilfe help with this? Three layers of safety:

  1. 3-variant preview (in the Standard and Premium plans): you see three different suggestions with difficulty level and image before you settle on one. This one doesn't fit? One of the others will — no expensive “mis-investment” in ingredients.
  2. Step-by-step instructions with images: at every step you know what the intermediate result should look like. No nasty surprises at the end.
  3. Leftover use is built in: even if one course goes wrong, the next day you'll find a new recipe from the remaining ingredients — instead of throwing them away.

A single rescued dinner a month pays your subscription back four times over. That's not an advertising claim, that's maths.

More than just using up leftovers

What starts as “using up leftovers” quickly becomes a habit: you cook less by plan and more by what's already there. That has two effects:

  1. You throw away significantly less (studies show up to a 40% reduction with systematic leftover use)
  2. You save money, because you no longer buy “just in case” — you buy what you need

A family of four saves around €930 a year in discarded food this way, according to the Bundesernährungsministerium (Germany's federal food ministry).

Frequently asked questions

Does it work with just 2-3 ingredients?

Yes. The minimum requirement is 1 main ingredient (protein or vegetable). If you enter just “tomatoes”, you get classic simple dishes (tomato soup, bruschetta, etc.).

What if I don't like an ingredient?

You can mark it as an exclusion. Then it never appears in your recipes — not even as a tip.

Does the AI get better the more I use it?

To a certain extent, yes. The AI learns from your saved and “cooked” recipes which styles suit you. But we don't sell this data on — it stays in your account.

Can I view recipes without an internet connection?

Saved recipes are cached locally (PWA feature). Generating new ones only works online — the AI runs server-side.

What if the AI suggests a bad recipe?

Then you simply try again — generation is free within your monthly allowance. In Standard/Premium you can also use the 3-variant preview: 3 different recipe suggestions at once, you pick the best.

Conclusion

With the right method, the eternal “What shall we cook today?” becomes a 30-second question. The leftovers in the fridge don't turn into rubbish, but into inspiration. And in the end you save time, money and nerves.
