Ad-free recipe site: how to escape the advertising chaos while cooking

12 May 2026 7 min read· by KI-Kochhilfe Redaktion

🌐 This article is written in German. Your browser can translate it automatically.

Who hasn't been annoyed by this?

You're hungry, you want to find a quick recipe for the ingredients in your fridge — and on the recipe site you feel like you're being pounced on by ten advertising banners at once. A video ad between step 2 and step 3, a newsletter pop-up at the side, and at the bottom the cookie banner that won't go away.

Then you scroll down looking for the ingredients list — and before the method comes the author's life story first, followed by a sponsored ad for food processors you weren't going to buy anyway.

If that sounds familiar: you're not alone. And it isn't your fault.

Why traditional recipe sites work that way

The business model is advertising — not the recipe

Most recipe portals are funded by advertising revenue. The longer you stay on the page, the more pop-ups you see, the more often you click, the more they earn. The recipe itself is just the vehicle to get you onto the site.

This model has clear consequences for the user experience:

  • Long introductory texts before the actual recipe (Google loves text, so text gets produced — even if nobody wants to read it)
  • Image sliders and carousels that fill advertising slots
  • Step-by-step instructions with adverts between the steps (every ad impression counts)
  • Newsletter overlays demanding your email before you've finished reading
  • Exit pop-ups when you leave the page (“Wait! Here are 5 more recipes…”)

None of this is meant maliciously — it's simply economic logic. If the site is free, you are the product.

The premium trap

Many portals offer to remove the advertising in exchange for a monthly subscription. At first that sounds fair: you pay a small amount, and in return the site is ad-free. But:

  • You pay only for the absence of something that needn't be there in the first place
  • The features often don't change — you get no better personalisation, no new tools, no different database
  • As soon as you cancel, the advertising comes straight back
  • The underlying tracking cookies often stay active regardless

That's a bit like paying extra in a restaurant so the waiter stops shouting adverts in your ear.

How can it be done differently?

At KI-Kochhilfe, we have chosen a different path.

Ad-free. Always. Even for free.

Whether you're just trying out the free trial recipes or have a Premium subscription: there is no advertising. No banners, no sponsors, no affiliate pop-ups, no external tracking cookies you haven't consented to yourself.

Why does that work? Because our business model is the subscription, not advertising. You pay from €5.99/month (Basis plan) — and for that you get a tool, not an advertising medium.

The important thing: we earn money when you are satisfied and stay satisfied. Not when you click on banners out of frustration.

Recipes from your ingredients — not from a database

A second problem with traditional recipe sites: they show you what they have, not what you need. You search for “spinach”, see 50 recipes — but none of them matches what you still have in the fridge.

With us it's the other way round: you enter what you have at home, and within about a minute a matching recipe is generated. With a photo, preparation time and steps (calories from Standard). Completely tailored to your situation.

No hidden premium features

With us, the premium features are substantively different, not just “less advertising”:

  • Allergens & exclusions (input from Standard; automatic allergen detection is included in every plan — even the free one): define once what you can't eat — every subsequent recipe respects that automatically
  • Family profiles (from Standard — and already in the trial account): up to 6 people with different diets at the same time — a single recipe that works for everyone
  • Weekly menu planner with smart use of leftovers (Premium)
  • AirFryer mode (from Standard) as a separate generation variant
  • Step images on request for individual steps (Standard: 10, Premium: 15 per month)

Those are real differences in functionality — not just hiding the adverts.

“Is the site really completely ad-free?”

Yes. Here is the honest inventory of what we load technically:

  • Our own code, CSS and fonts (from our server in Frankfurt — no Google Fonts)
  • Supabase for login, database and recipe images (EU, Ireland)
  • Umami — our own self-hosted reach measurement, completely cookie-free
  • Sentry for error reports (EU region Frankfurt)
  • Stripe only when paying: you are redirected to Stripe's payment page — no Stripe script is loaded on our pages
  • Optional Google Analytics 4 — only if you consent in the cookie banner, and exclusively for anonymous reach measurement (no IP addresses stored)

No ad networks, no Facebook pixel, no TikTok pixel, no retargeting, no external banners. You can check this yourself by opening the network console in your browser while viewing a recipe.

You'll find more transparency on this in our privacy policy.

Comparison at a glance

Criterion Traditional recipe sites KI-Kochhilfe
Advertising in free mode Constantly Never
Advertising in paid mode Reduced / gone Never
Recipe from the ingredients you have Search manually Generated in about a minute
Allergies for the whole family Filter manually Taken into account automatically
Weekly menu with use of leftovers Plan it yourself Automatic on request
Recipe language (30+ languages, e.g. DE, EN, FR, HU) Usually one language only Freely selectable
Tracking cookies Often many Only technically necessary; our own statistics without cookies (Umami), GA4 only with consent
Newsletter pop-ups Yes No

What does all this cost?

We have three plans:

  • Basis: €5.99/month — 30 recipes with photo, save up to 10, gallery recipes; ideal for individuals
  • Standard: €7.99/month — 65 recipes, unlimited saving, calories, AirFryer mode, 10 step images/month, family profiles
  • Premium: €11.99/month — 90 recipes, 15 step images/month, weekly menu planner (allergen detection in every plan)

For comparison: a premium subscription at a traditional recipe portal usually costs €3–6 a month depending on the provider — and all you get for it is the advertising removed. With us you get a complete AI cooking tool on top.

All plans can be cancelled at any time to the end of the billing period (monthly, quarterly or yearly — your choice), and you can even pause them for 1–3 months (e.g. while on holiday) — an option many competitors don't offer at all.

Frequently asked questions

Do you sell my data?

No. We don't live off selling data but off satisfied subscribers. For details, see the privacy policy.

How many cookies do you set?

One login cookie (session) and — only for the 2 trial recipes without an account — one cookie with an anonymous identifier. The cookie notice and the onboarding marker live in your browser's local storage, not in cookies. Google Analytics 4 only after your consent; our own statistics (Umami) work entirely without cookies. Nothing more. You can withdraw everything at any time.

What happens if I cancel?

After cancellation, your recipe collection and your weekly menu archive remain accessible in your account in read-only mode for another 3 months — after that the account is deleted automatically in line with the terms (we remind you several times by email beforehand; if you reactivate before then, everything is kept). You can cancel at any time without giving a reason.

Do you have an app?

We are a Progressive Web App — on iOS and Android, the site is added to the home screen via the browser and then behaves like a native app. No download needed, no 200 MB of storage taken up, no app-store ratings to read.

Conclusion

A recipe site without advertising is not a given in 2026 — it is a deliberate decision. We decided against turning our users into the product. Instead, we are building a tool you enjoy using because it works — not because it wants to persuade you to buy something.

Give it a try. You'll feel the difference from your very first recipe.
