Vegan, lactose-free or gluten-free? How to combine several diets in one recipe

The problem: one family, several needs

In modern households it's rare for everyone to eat the same thing. One of the most common scenarios:

  • One adult vegan
  • One child lactose-intolerant
  • One adult gluten-free (e.g. because of coeliac disease)

Three separate dishes? No time. One that covers all three? Quite a puzzle. This is where AI recipe generation that understands several diets at once comes into play.

The logic of combining

With several diets active at the same time, an AI recipe generator has to satisfy all restrictions at once: allergens and excluded ingredients are merged, and for the diet style the most comprehensive one applies (vegan already covers lactose-free). What the individual diets exclude:

Diet What is avoided
Vegan All animal products (meat, fish, milk, eggs, honey)
Vegetarian Meat and fish
Lactose-free Dairy products containing lactose (milk, cream, cream cheese, yoghurt); hard cheese and butter are usually fine
Gluten-free Wheat, rye, barley, spelt; oats only if labelled gluten-free
Pescatarian Meat (fish allowed)
Keto / low-carb Sugar, flour, starchy foods
Paleo Grains, pulses, dairy products, refined sugar

Example logic: vegan + gluten-free + lactose-free → vegan is the most comprehensive diet style (it already covers lactose-free) → what remains as the requirement is “vegan + gluten-free”.

Which dishes are a particularly good fit

With multiple restrictions, some cuisines work surprisingly well:

  • Asian: rice noodles, tofu, vegetables, soy sauce (for gluten-free: tamari labelled gluten-free) — that makes it vegan + gluten-free + lactose-free.
  • Mediterranean vegan: millet, hummus, roasted vegetables, olive oil — covers vegan, gluten-free and lactose-free in a single step.
  • Indian (dal & curry): lentils, rice, coconut milk, lots of spices — vegan, gluten-free, lactose-free in one bowl.
  • Mexican: beans, corn tortillas, avocado, salsa — usually vegan + gluten-free out of the box.

How KI-Kochhilfe makes it easy

From Standard — and already in the free trial account — you can store up to 6 family members, each with their own diet style, allergens and excluded ingredients. Before every recipe you tap who's eating under “Who's eating?” — the app automatically picks the most comprehensive diet style and merges all allergens and excluded ingredients into a single list. Tip: for coeliac disease or lactose intolerance, add “Gluten” or “Lactose” to the profile as an allergen too — allergens are strictly excluded from the recipe.

So you don't have to work it out yourself: “Which dish is vegan and gluten-free at the same time?” — the AI does that. You get a recipe straight away that is safe and suitable for everyone at the same time.

Tip: what to do when the AI struggles with very restrictive combinations?

Sometimes diets are so restrictive that the result gets boring. Three tricks:

  1. Name a specific dish: instead of “something quick” → “tofu bowl” or “lentil curry”. A narrower brief → better suggestions.
  2. Specify the ingredients: “I have quinoa, sweet potato, spinach” — the AI turns them into a suitable dish.
  3. Use the 3-variant mode (Standard and Premium, also in the trial account): you get three difficulty levels — Easy / Advanced / Gourmet — and can pick the most exciting one.
